Our vision is to equip and empower older generations to take control of their health by increasing access, uptake and engagement to falls prevention exercises and increase awareness of healthy ageing practices. Falls are the leading cause of accidental death in older people; costs to NHS exceed £2.3 billion and in US $50 billion per year (NICE, 2013; CDC, 2015). Strong evidence concludes that strength and balance based exercises reduce falls by up to 42%, yet levels of exercise are generally low without therapist input (Gillespie et al., 2012).
Research to date has involved in-depth testing with over 100 adults aged 65 and older, in Sheltered Housing facilities in the UK. Findings demonstrate that the system is easy to use, acceptable, engaging, can be safely used independently (no adverse events in 6 weeks trial) with improvements in balance, function and confidence. These benefits may ultimately enable Older Adults to be less reliant on health and social care provision and reduce fall-related injuries and associated costs.
